The Seattle Courant

Seattle, Washington

What this is

The Seattle Courant is a news aggregator for the Seattle politics and civic news: the city council, the mayor's office, budgets, transportation, land use, King County, and even some Olympia news.

What it was

From October 2007 to June 2009, The Seattle Courant was an online newspaper covering city government and businesses, with its own reporters and its own bylines. It stopped publishing in the summer of 2009.

Every story it ever ran is still in the archive.

How the front page is assembled

A custom built application, written in Rust, aggregates Seattle from a myriad of source. The lede is chosen by ranking the day's candidates against a short description of what this paper covers, so the top slot reflects the beat rather than whichever feed happened to update last.

There is no tracking on this site and no third-party scripts. The page makes no external requests at all. I do run ads for some of the applications I've built, like Bosco.

Following along

Everything that reaches the front page also goes out over RSS, including headlines the three-item columns push off the page. Ledes are kept in the recent ledes list as they are replaced.

Me

My name is Keith Vance. I used to live in Seattle a long time ago. If anyone in Seattle would like to take over this website or contribute original reporting, please contact me. I would love to see some original reporting on this site again from someone who lives in Seattle.
